The landscape speaks - we listen.
Taking part in Bee Breeders' international competition to build a museum in the Icelandic volcanic landscape was an inspiring journey for us - both architecturally and atmospherically.
Our concept picks up on the raw power of the surroundings: the lava rock, the vastness, the silence. The structure seems to float above the terrain, supported by concrete pillars that appear to have grown out of the earth. Large glass fronts open up the view of the landscape and create a connection between the interior and nature - between myth and the present.
The materials and design language have been deliberately reduced and clearly chosen: Concrete as an expression of durability, glass as a symbol of openness and reflection.
In the midst of the archaic backdrop between Lake Mývatn and the Hverfjall volcano, a place of collection and encounter is being created - a museum with a café that not only shows Icelandic mythology, but also makes it tangible in terms of atmosphere, materiality and expression.
